Is moisture disrupting your flooring installation?

Why is it so important to control?

Here are a few commonly known facts about concrete and moisture.

  • Water is an essential ingredient of concrete.
  • Hydration and evaporation control are fundamental to the concrete curing process – both moisture related.
  • Concrete dries at about 25mm per month from the later of: concrete pour OR the last time it was wet.

Thinking about the moisture exiting the concrete during the drying process – what happens if it is trapped under a floor covering or behind a wall coating or lining?

If not controlled, moisture causes havoc with adhesives, linings or fabrics. Resilient floor coverings will bubble. Adhesives may dissolve. Coatings may flake and peel. Collected moisture can lead to fungal growth and mildew.

These situations usually result from construction schedules pushing ahead of the ideal curing times. And speaking practically in today’s fast-paced construction programs, who has 4 months+ to wait for a floor slab to be safe to install floorcoverings? Yet flooring manufacturers’ warranties are in the main voided if the concrete substrate moisture level is above the safe threshold.

SO – Can concrete moisture be controlled?

YES, the answer is found in a catalytic hydrogel treatment.
(YES there are moisture barrier surface membranes, BUT these do nothing to control the moisture internally, trapping the moisture into the slab. It only takes a pinhole to let the moisture go!)

The spray-applied AQURON 2000 catalytic hydrogel treatment penetrates deep into the concrete’s porosity, transforming free moisture in the concrete into a hydrogel, preventing its movement into, out of, or within the concrete.

This simple and cost-effective treatment has other benefits too:

  • Applied at concrete pour provides curing equal to 14 days of water curing.
  • 2,000,000m2 track record in New Zealand and Australia, and comes with a 15-year guarantee – your insurance and confidence.
  • Protects the reinforcing steel for the long-term, by preventing the ingress of moisture-borne contaminants.
  • Hardens the concrete, and prevents dusting, by reducing carbonation.
